The Toy Dolls es una mítica banda británica de punk de los 80 creada en 1979 en Suderland, y que está formada actualmente por Michael "Olga" Algar (voz y guitarra), Duncan "El increíble Mr. Duncan" Redmonds (batería y voces) y Tom "Tommy Goober" Blyth (bajo y voces).

Después de 6 años de espera, The Toy Dolls, una de las bandas más importantes y veteranas de punk-rock, rompe su silencio discográfico con The Album After The Last One (2012) de la mano de Maldito Records.

Todas las canciones han sido compuestas por Michael Algar, temas punk rock con un toque pop, divertidas, alegres, festivas y muy guitarreras. A pesar de la veteranía del grupo, siguen emitiendo ese aire fresco como si fuera un grupo nuevo, y como si este fuera su primer disco. ¡Larga vida a las Muñecas de Juguete!.
LA ENTREVISTA
Con motivo de su gira por España, no podíamos desperdiciar la ocasión de entrevistar a la mítica banda. Michael "Olga" Algar nos atendió amablemente.
En este último álbum, The Album After The Last One (2012), continuáis con el punk rock de los años ochenta y la rabia de los años setenta, mezclada con la música rock y un poco de rock & roll y otros estilos. En general, parece que los Toy Dolls se inspiran en los sonidos de los años 70 en sus temas. ¿Qué puedes decirnos al respecto?
Ah, sí ¡buen punto! Los años 70 es cuando yo era joven, siempre a la escucha de Suzi Quatro, Slade, Mud, The Sweet, etc. La influencia del rock’n roll viene de todos los discos que mi hermano mayor dejó ¡cuando se fue de casa en los años 60! y de los años 80, así que ¡es mi fuente de inspiración punk!
In this latest album, The Album After The Last One (2012), you continue with the punk rock of the eighties, and the rage of the seventies, mixed with rock music and a bit of rock and roll and others styles. Overall, it seems The Toy Dolls is inspired by the sounds of the 70’s in their themes. What can you tell us about it?
Ha, yes, good
point! The 70s is when I was a
youngster, always listening to Suzi Quatro, Slade, Mud, The Sweet, etc. The
rock n roll influence comes from all the records my older brother left at home
from the 60s! and the 80s, well that's
my Punk inspiration!
¿Cuál es la razón que
impulsa a una banda inglesa a hacer una gira larga e intensa por toda España? ¿Qué
esperáis del público español?
¡Otra buena pregunta! Bueno, ¡siempre lo hemos pasado muy
bien en vuestro país! Todo el mundo quiere salir de fiesta, la gente es feliz y
amigable, ¡esto nos hace felices también!
¡Nunca se sabe qué se puede esperar del público! Sin
embargo, sería agradable ver algunas caras conocidas en la multitud y gente
nueva también!
Which is the reason that leads to an English band, to do a long and intense
tour around Spain
Another good
question! Well, we have always had a wicked time in your country! Everyone
wants to party, lovely friendly happy people, this makes us happy too!
Not sure what to
expect from the public! But it would be nice to see some old faces in the crowd
and new ones too!
¿Qué será diferente
en esta gira española? ¿Qué verá el público en vuestro show?
Siempre es difícil elegir un repertorio, si se ponen
demasiadas nuevas canciones a la gente no le gusta, si se ponen demasiadas ya
conocidas ¡es el mismo problema! Por eso, hemos incluido canciones desde los
más de 33 años que llevamos juntos y algunos del nuevo álbum.
El Increíble Mr. Duncan, nuestro batería, llega a tocar el
violín en algunos shows y Tommy Goober (nuestro bajista) y ¡trataré de tocar la
canción the drooling banjos!! Nuevo vestuario también, ¡y algo nuevo en general!
What will be different on this Spanish tour? What will audience see at
your show?
It’s always
difficult choosing a set, if you put too many new songs in people are not
happy, if put too many old ones in then it's the same problem! So we have including songs from over the 33
years we have been together, and a few from the new album.
The Amazing Mr
Duncan, our drummer gets to play violin at some shows, and Tommy Goober (our
bass player) and I will be trying to play the drooling banjos song! New stage clothes also, and a nice new back
drop!
En cuanto a vuestra
agenda de conciertos, ¡no tenéis fechas libres en mayo! ¿Cómo es estar siempre
de viaje? ¿Cuándo encontráis tiempo para vosotros para relajaros o para seguir
componiendo?
Sí, duro trabajo hombres ya mayores, ¡eh!
No hay tiempo realmente para relajarse en el camino, me
gusta escribir solo en casa, esto se suele hacer entre giras, al igual que en 2011,
que sólo hicimos dos conciertos, el resto del tiempo estaba escribiendo y
grabando. El tiempo de relax vendrá en 2014 creo, cuando daremos menos
conciertos en directo, en ese momento volveré a escribir.
Looking at your concert schedule, you have no free dates on May! How is
always travelling? When do you find time for yourself to relax or to continue
composing?
Yeah, hard work for
old men eh!
There’s no time
really for relaxing on the road, I like to write at home alone, this is usually
done between tours, like 2011, we only played 2 shows, the rest of the time was
writing and recording. Next relaxing time will be 2014 I guess, this will be
quite regarding live shows, at that point I will be writing again.

planes para el 2012? ¿Algún nuevo proyecto? ¿Podéis anticiparnos algo? O ¿Estaréis
de gira todo el año?
¡2012 consistirá en la gira por tu gran país! A
continuación, un verano lleno de festivales, después la principal gira por
clubs a partir de octubre, que se alargará hasta diciembre, ¡entonces querré vacaciones!
Oh, sí, una cosa, en el otoño habrá un disco CLÁSICO de Toy
Dolls, todos nuestros temas favoritos tocados con instrumentos clásicos como el
arpa clásica / flauta / violonchelo, etc. ¡e interpretada por un músico clásico
en París!

What are your the plans for 2012? Do you have any new projects? Can you
anticipate anything to us? … Or you will be in a tour all the year?
2012 will consist
of the tour of your great country! Then a summer full of festivals, then the
main club tour stating in October, lasting through to December, then I wanna
holiday!
Oh yeah, one thing,
in the Autumn there will be a CLASSICAL Toy Dolls album, all Toy Doll
favourites played on classic harp/flute/cello etc.. and performed by a classic
musician in Paris

¿Creéis que el mundo
digital va a terminar con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál creéis que es el futuro de la música?
Bueno, ¡supongo que ya está sucediendo algo así! Pero así es
la vida, tenemos que aceptar el cambio y cómo son las cosas, nunca nada cambiará
los shows en vivo, esa es la esencia de esta profesión. Hacer discos, en CD o
en formato digital está bien, pero las actuaciones en directo son más
importantes.
Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today?
What do you think is the future of music?
Well I guess it
already kind of has! But this is life,
we have to accept change and the way things are, nothing is ever gonna change
the LIVE shows, this is what its all about really! Making records, CDs or digitally is fine, but
LIVE gigs are the most important.
¿Cuál es tu mejor
recuerdo de la música?
Todos los días me despierto y todavía no puedo creer que
tenemos un público fiel, ¡y cuanto tiempo llevamos tocando! ¡Nunca pensé que
pudiera vivir de esto! ¡Estoy muy contento de haber elegido la música!
El mejor recuerdo es el día en que compré mi primera
guitarra, estuve más de dos años repartiendo periódicos y ahorrando para ello!
What is your best memory about music?
Everyday I wake up
and still cannot believe that we have such a loyal following, and how ling we
have been playing! And I never expected I would be making music full time!
I am so happy I
chose music!
Best memory is the
day I bought first guitar; it took me over 2 years of delivering newspapers to
save up for it!
