Kitty, Daisy & Lewis - Smoking in Heaven (2010). Entrevista a Daisy Durham

EL GRUPO

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis es un grupo de música inglés compuesto por Kitty Durham, Lewis Durham y Daisy Durham; su música está fuertemente influenciada por el Rockabilly, R&B, Swing, Country, Blues, y Rock 'n' Roll, y su estilo se aproxima al Rockabilly Revival, al Country vintage y a la primera generación de blues. Sus principales referencias son los "tres Louis": Louis Jordan, Louis Prima y Louis Armstrong, pero podrían nombrarse otros como Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Sam Cooke.

Los tres hermanos se reparten los instrumentos y cambian sus papel de vocalista e instrumentalista en cada canción. Kitty Durham es la más joven del grupo, normalmente canta y toca la armónica, la batería o percusión, el ukulele, el banjo, el trombón, y la guitarra. Lewis Durham, 3 años mayor que Kitty, canta ocasionalmente y toca la guitarra, la guitarra lap steel, el piano, el banjo, y la batería o percusión. Daisy Durham, 2 años mayor que Lewis, es la mayor del grupo, canta y toca la batería o percusión, el piano, el acordeón y el xilófono. Sus padres (Graeme Durham y Ingrid Weiss) participan también, con la guitarra rítmica y el contrabajo.

No utilizan ningún formato digital en la grabación de sus canciones, todo se realiza de forma analógica: Lewis es un fanático de los vinilos y graba sus canciones en formatos totalmente obsoletos; esto y su afición por la música vintage le llevó a publicar una recopilación A to Z - Kitty, Daisy & Lewis - The Roots of Rock 'n' Roll, el cual fue nombrado álbum del año 2007 por The Guardian.

Smoking in Heaven (2010) es el último disco hasta la fecha de los hermanos Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. Del disco ya se han extraído tres singles, I'm so sorry y "en la cara B" I'm going back, Messing with my life y Don't make a fool out of me.

Smoking in Heaven (2010) tiene significativas novedades respecto de sus anteriores trabajos, algunas tan  importantes como que todos los temas están compuestos por los hermanos Durham, ya no son versiones, y el estilo de las canciones se amplían más allá de lo realizado hasta ahora y se tocan géneros como el Ska, el Rocksteady, el Calypso o el Jazz.

¿Por qué el nombre de Kitty, Daisy & Lewis y no otro nombre para el grupo?

Pasamos años tratando de encontrar un buen nombre. Uno que no nos encasillara de ninguna manera, entonce, nos pidieron tocar en nuestro primer festival "Tapestry Goes West". Barry (que dirigía el festival) era ya un amigo nuestro de nuestro café local. No teníamos un nombre de la banda para poner en el cartel del festival así que Barry solo puso nuestros nombres. Nuestra mamá y papá no estaban todavía en la banda, por lo que fue catalogado como Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. Al final, sencillamente, acabamos pegados a él. Por suerte, no tenemos nombres como Keith y Leslie!

Why the name “Kitty, Daisy & Lewis” and not other name for the band? 

We spent ages trying to come up with a good name. One that wouldn't pigeon hole us in any way, then we got asked to play our first ever festival "Tapestry Goes West" Barry (who ran the festival) was already  a friend of ours from our local cafe. We didn't have a band name to put on the festival poster so Barry just listed our names. Our mum and dad were not yet in the band, so it was billed as kitty, Daisy & Lewis.  We ended up just sticking with it. Luckily we don't have names like Keith and Lesley! 

La música de Kitty, Daisy & Lewis me recuerda  a una mezcla entre el swing, country, blues y el rock 'n' roll de los años 50 con el rockabilly  y (puede que) el soul de los años 60, pero todo esto con la fuerza del siglo XXI. ¿Cuáles son realmente vuestras influencias musicales?

Nos gustan muchos estilos diferentes de música. Algunos de estos artistas como son The Kinks, Garry Glitter, Herb Alpert, Lordr Kitchiner, Louis Jordan. So Solid Crew! La lista sigue y sigue. Empezamos tocando versiones en nuestro primer disco porque esas eran las canciones que ya conocíamos y que habíamos estado tocando en casa desde que éramos niños dolo para divertirnos. Creo que nuestro segundo álbum "Smoking In Heaven" empieza a mostrar algunas de nuestras otras influencias, ya que hemos escrito todas las canciones de nosotros mismos.

The music of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis reminds me to a mix between the swing, country, blues and rock 'n' roll of fifties with the rockabilly  and (maybe) soul of sixties, but  all this,  with the force of XXI century. What are your really musical influences?

We love so many different styles of music. Some of the artists being The kinks, Garry glitter, herb Alpert, Lord Kitchiner, Louis Jordan. So solid crew! The list goes on and on. We started off playing covers for our first album because those were the songs we already knew and had been playing at home since we were tiny kids just for enjoyment. I think our second album "Smoking In Heaven" starts to show off some of our other influences, because we wrote all of the songs ourselves. 

¿Qué vamos a encontrar diferente en vuestro último álbum "Smoking in Heaven"? ¿Por qué lo llamasteis "Smoking in Heaven"? ¿Para cuándo el nuevo disco?

Creo que “Smoking In Heaven"  tiene diferentes estilos como el Ska, el Soul, Psicodelia de los 60, y tal vez incluso un poco de Hip Hop, pero aún refleja nuestra música de fuertes raíces y las influencias del Blues. Mi papá tenía un sueño que mi mamá se le ocurrió el título (“Smoking In Heaven"  --Fumar en el cielo--) por un título de la canción. En el sueño, pensó que era un mal título.Cuando se despertó del sueño vio que realmente le gustaba, y así lo hicimos. Nos quedamos con ese nombre.

What's we will  be found different in your last album, “Smoking in Heaven”? Why did you titled it “Smoking in Heaven”? When the new album?

I think "Smoking in heaven" has some different styles including ska, soul, 60's psychedelic, and maybe even a bit of hip hop, but it still reflects our heavy roots music and blues influences. My dad had a dream that my mum came up with the title (smoking in heaven) for a song title. In the dream he thought this was a bad title.  When he woke up from the dream he really liked it, and so did we.  We stuck with that name. 

Esta no es la primera vez que actuáis en concierto en España. Creo que es… ¿la tercera?. ¿Qué vas a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperas del público español en sus conciertos?

Vas a haber un montón de energía en nuestros conciertos. Hay algo para todos en nuestra música. Tenemos un público tan diverso. Hemos tocado en España un par de veces y la gente es siempre entusiasta y animada. Siempre nos sentimos bienvenidos y felices de que todo el mundo esté disfrutando.

This is not your first time in concert around Spain. I think it may be ... the third time? What are you going to offer in your live concerts, and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows this time?

You can expect lots of energy in our shows. There is something for everyone in our music. Which is we have such a diverse audience. We have played in Spain a few times and the crowed is always great and enthusiastic and lively. We always feel very welcome and happy that everyone is enjoying themselves. 

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2012?, ¿algo que podáis anticiparnos?

Trabajar en nuestro próximo álbum significa que en realidad no podemos hacer ninguna gran gira en este momento. Sólo estamos haciendo conciertos y actuaciones. Principalmente festivales en este momento.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2012?. Can you anticipate anything to us? 

Working on our next album means that we can't really do any big tours at the moment. We are just doing bits and bobs. Mainly festivals at this time. 

¿Pensáis que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?

Creo que no hay vuelta atrás. Casi todo el mundo está usando lo digital hoy en día. La tecnología va a seguir cambiando. Creo que la mayoría de la música comercial actual es tan mala. Casi todos ellos son “dance” y usan autosintonizadores. Espero pronto un cambio. Cualquier cambio. Necesitamos otra leyenda en breve. No ha habido ninguna desde hace años.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I think there is no going back. Almost everyone is using digital now. Technology is going to continue to change.  I think most of the current mainstream music is so bad. Almost all of them are dance and use auto tuners. I'm hoping for a change soon. Any change. We need another legend soon. There hasn't been one for years. 

¿Cuál es vuestro mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Ha habido muchos. Principalmente sólo los buenos momentos que ha habido en improvisaciones y cantando con toda la familia, en las primeras horas de la mañana.

What is your best memory about music?

There have been many. Mainly just the good times we had jamming and singing with the whole family and going on to the early hours of the morning. 

¿Habéis oído hablar del #15-M o también  llamada la #Spanish-revolution? ¿Qué  pensáis al respecto?

No, no he oído hablar de ello.

Have you heard of the #15-M or also called the #Spanish-revolution?. What do you think about it?

No I haven't heard of it.

¿Podrías decirnos…

... Un libro?: Los Cretinos (1980). Mi libro favorito de Roald Dahl desde que era una niña. 

... Una película?: Hook (1991) de Steven Spielberg. Una película que a mi, Kitty y Lewis nos encanta. Mi mamá lo compró a alguien en McDonald cuando salió. Sabemos todos sus diálogos y siempre se ríen de las líneas de que cuando estamos en su recorrido. Incluso compramos una versión en alemán cuando estábamos de gira en Alemania, así que la pudimos ver en el autobús de la gira. ¡Es triste lo sé!

... Una canción?:

Esa es una pregunta difícil. Hay muchas para elegir. Me gusta bastante Pretty África (1967) de Desmond Dekker. Es una de las mejores canciones de Rocksteady que conozco.
... Un álbum?: A Swinging Safari (1962) by Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra. Ha sido mi disco favorito desde que lo escuché por primera vez cuando era niña. Todo es música alegre y jovial con grandes melodías. No soy muy entusiasta de sus otros álbumes, pero esta es una verdadera obra maestra. Nunca he oído a nadie decir que no le guste.

... Un grupo o solista?: No descubrí a Louis Jordan I hasta que tuve 14 o 15 años. Me encanta su texto inteligente y divertido, y la forma en que canta tan rítmicamente, pero dulce al mismo tiempo. Su música tiene grandes melodías armónicas. Me gusta y él me ha inspirado mucho. La canción Ooo wee (2008) de nuestro primer álbum, es una versión de su canción. 

Could you tell us about...

... A book?: The Twits (1980). My favourite Roald Dahl book since I was a kid. 

... A movie?: Hook (1991) by Steven Spielberg. A film that me, Kitty and Lewis love. My mum bought it off someone in McDonald when it came out. We know all the words and always laugh at lines from it when we are on your tour. We even bought a German version when we were touring in Germany so we could watch it on the tour bus. Sad I know!
... A song?: That's a hard one. There are so many to choose from. I love Pretty Africa (1967) by Desmond Dekker. It's one on the greatest Rocksteady songs I know.
... An album?: A Swinging Safari (1962) by Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra. It's been my favourite album ever since I first heard it as a kid. It's all happy jolly music with great melodies. I'm not too keen on any of his other albums, but this one is a true masterpiece. I have never heard anyone say they don't like it.
... A group or soloist?: Louis Jordan I didn't discover him until I was about 14 or 15. I love his clever and funny wording and the way he sings so rhythmically but sweet at the same time. His music has great tuneful melodies. I just love him and he has inspired me so much. The song Ooo wee (2008) on our first album is a cover of his version.
