Escape with Romeo
es una banda de rock alemana, fundada en 1989 en Colonia. Su estilo musical es Post-Punk
y música electrónica moderna. Una característica de su música es el sonido de
guitarra distintivo de Thomas Elbern.
En 1989 nace Escape
with Romeo, fundado por el guitarrista y cantante Thomas Elbern después de dejar Pink
Turns Blue. En el año siguiente, el grupo da sus primeros conciertos, y se
edita Somebody y Helicopters in the falling rain.
El grupo sigue grabando discos en los años siguientes, Autumn
on Venus (1991), Next stop eternally (1993) que
acompaña con giras por Alemania y el resto de Europa.
En 1995, Thomas
Elbern edita un disco en solitario interpretado en alemán Kault
und elektrisch (1995). Esto no impide que al año siguiente, el grupo siga
editando discos, Blast of silence (1995), How far can you go? (1998), Come here the white Light (2001),
Love alchemy (2002). En 2003
se publcia el EP acústico Stripped Again con versiones de
Serious, Grounded, Refuge
Helicopters in the fallig Rain y Brave new Flesh, y al año siguiente,
Psalms
of survival (2004), y más tarde, Emotional Iceage (2007).
En la actualidad el grupo está formado por Thomas Elbern (voz y guitarra), Martin 'Potti' Pott (teclados y guitarra
acústica) y Frenzy (batería).
EL DISCO
Tras un parón de 5 años, Escape From Romeo, vuelve
a la escena internacional con un nuevo álbum, Samsara (2012). En 2013, y previo a sus conciertos en España el 6
de abril de 2013, el grupo edita su
canción Sie liebt dich en una versión en castellano, con el título Te
ama (o tal vez no), con una introducción de Marcos Manzanedo, que le da un toque distinto al tema original.

musicales reales?
Mis influencias musicales se iniciaron en los 70.

The music of "Escape With
Romeo" sounds like a beautiful mix between Dark Pop and Electronic
Underground. Deep sounds of the 70 and 80,
a evocative sound full of magic, and a great passion for music. So, what are
your real musical influences?
My musical influences started in the 70’s.
It was David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Neil Young just to name a few.
I started with folk music, then discovered the electric guitar and it's
possibilities and finally beginning of the 80s the synthesizer,
I was influenced by all of this and developed my musical style in
between all those artists and bands.
¿Cuál es la
diferencia entre la música de Escape With Romeo en la actualidad y su música
hace treinta años?
El proceso de grabación ha
cambiado drásticamente.
Al principio se solían usar cinta
magnética y ahora el ordenador es la herramienta principal.
En EWR, utilizamos tecnología
moderna, pero esto no hace que la música sea mejor.
Hay más posibilidades, pero me
parece que sigue siendo muy importante tener algo que decir o escribir.
La música hace 30 años estaba prácticamente
en las manos de una pequeña élite, sin embargo hoy, todo el mundo puede hacer
música con sólo unos pocos clics.
Así que la música que hacemos
ahora tiene que tener mucha más profundidad que otras bandas y artistas, sólo
para llamar la atención.
What is the difference between
the music of Escape With Romeo today and your music thirty years ago?
The recording process has
changed drastically.
In the early days it used to be
tapemachines and now the computer is the main tool.
With EWR, we use modern
technology , but on the other hand, it doesn't make the music any better.
It expands the possibilities,
but I find it still very important to have something to say or to write about.
The music 30 years ago was much
more in the hands of a small elite, whether today everybody can make music with
just a few clicks.
So the music we make now has to
have much more depth than other bands and artists, just to get noticed.
¿Por qué has titulado Samsara
a vuestro último álbum? ¿Qué vamos a
encontrar diferente en él de otros álbumes anteriores de Escape With Romeo?
Samsara es una palabra tomada del
sánscrito (lengua clásica de la India), que significa literalmente "flujo
continuo", es el ciclo repetitivo de nacimiento, vida, muerte y
renacimiento (reencarnación).
En este disco se canta, además de
inglés, también en alemán.
Esto nunca se había hecho en
ningún álbum EWR.
Me pareció bastante difícil traducir
nuestras letras.
También la influencia de
elementos electrónicos es bastante fuerte en "Samsara"
Why do
you have titled “Samsara”, your last album? What's we will be finding different
in this CD from other previous albums from Escape With Romeo?
Samsara is a word taken from
the sanskrit, literally
meaning "continuous flow", It is the repeating cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth (reincarnation)
On this
album we sing, apart from english, also in german.
This was
never done on any EWR Album.
I found it
quite challenging to expand our lyrics.
Also the
influence of electronic elements is pretty strong on "Samsara"
Esta no es la primera vez que actuáis en concierto en España. ¿Qué vais
a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público español en vuestros conciertos?
Espero que haya muchos españoles
que vengan a nuestros conciertos.
Esta vez vamos a ofrecer una
combinación de 25 años de EWR.
Eso significa, que sonarán
algunas canciones de las más antiguas y algunas de las que se acaban de publicar
en “Samsara”.
Supongo, que sonarán en esta
gira, la mayoría de las canciones que le gusta al público español.
This
is not your first time in concert around Spain. What are you going to offer in
your live concerts and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows
this time?
I hope that there are a lot of
spanish people, that come to our shows.
This time we will offer a mix
of 25 years of EWR.
That means some very old songs
and some songs that we have just released in Samsara.
I guess that most the songs ,
that spanish audience loves , will be heard on that tour.

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2013?,
¿algo que podáis anticiparnos? ¿Cuándo un nuevo disco?
La sorpresa de esta gira es que
se presenta una canción en "español".
Si visitas nuestra página web o
Facebook, puedes encontrar una canción que hicimos en "Samsara", pero
la versión en español es con un cantante diferente, y tiene un aura especial.
La canción se llama "Te ama
(o tal vez no)" y será nuestra sorpresa en Madrid.
Sobre un nuevo disco, no lo sé
todavía, pero si hay planes de gira por Sudamérica.
Do you
have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2013? Can you anticipate anything to us? When a new
disc?
The surprise for this tour is,
that we present a song in “español”.
When you check out our website
or facebook, you'll find a song, that we did on "Samsara" but the Spanish
version is with a different singer, and has a special atmosphere.
The song is called "Te ama
(o tal vez no)" and will be our surpise in Madrid.
About a new disc, I don't know
yet, but there are plans to tour in South America.
¿Piensas que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal
y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?
No sé que traerá el futuro a la música,
puede ser tan variado.
El 95% por ciento de los músicos
no pueden ganarse la vida solo con la música.
La música siempre va a ser muy
importante, pero ¿qué pasa con su valor?
Esto se ha perdido en el mundo de Youtube y Facebook.
Así que ¿tal vez es el momento de
hacer vinilo otra vez?
No sé....... peor caso sería que
la música en el futuro sea sólo una gran corriente de información y demasiada
para escuchar.
Do you
think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you
think is the future of music?
I don't know what the future of
music will bring, it is all very diverse.
95% percent of all musicians
cannot make a living out of music any more.
Music will always be very
important, but what about the value ?
It get's lost in the world of Youtube and Facebook.
So maybe it's time to make
vinyl again ?
I don't know.......Worst case
would be that music in the future is just one big stream of information and too
much to listen to.
¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?
Mis mejores recuerdos son siempre
un buen concierto, donde tienes en tu mano cómo reaccionar la gente en la
audición.
Al ver las caras felices después
del espectáculo, sentirse bien, eso es siempre lo mejor.
What
is your best memory about music?
My best memories is always a
good concert where you have it in your fingertips
how people react in the
audience.
Seeing lucky faces after the
show, feelin good, that's always the best.
¿Qué piensas de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo
en general?
La situación es grave, especialmente
ahora en Europa.
Hay una diferencia económica
entre el sur y el norte, y espero que no se hagan más grandes... esto podría
causar serios problemas.
Nunca tuvimos ningún problema en
España y tengo grandes recuerdos de las personas que he conocido allí.
Espero que la eurocrisis no afecte
a esto.
What
do you think of the current economic situation in Europe, and in the world in
general?
Situation is serious, specially
in europe now.
There is an economic gap
between the south and the north and I hope that it will not get bigger ...this
would cause serious trouble.
We never had any problems in Spain
and I have great memories of the people I have met there.
I hope that the eurocrisis
doesn't affect that.

He leído la autobiografía de Pete
Townsend de The Who.
Fue interesante, ya que lleva al
lector a los 60 y 70s y demostró que era un buen momento para la música de rock

I have read the autobiography
of Pete Townsend from the Who.
That was interesting, because
it takes the reader to the 6oties and 70ties and showed, that it was a great
time for rockmusic....I really liked it...

Recientemente vi una película en
el cine llamado "Fractus".
Se trataba de un grupo en los 80s,
que nunca existieron.
Así que es una especie de
documental de ficción, pero era muy, muy divertido

that never existed.
So it's a sort of fictional
documentary but it was very very amusing
