Venom - Fallen Angels (2011). Entrevista a Conrad 'Cronos' Lant

EL GRUPO

Venom es una banda británica formada en 1979 por los guitarristas Jeffrey "Mantas" Dunn y Conrad "Cronos" Lant, el batería Tony "Abaddon" Bray, el vocalista Clive "Jesus Christ" Archer y el bajista Alan Winston en Newcastle, Inglaterra. Sin embargo, la formación que más reconocimiento y fama obtuvo fue la formada por Mantas, Abaddon y Cronos como bajista y vocalista.

Venom es ampliamente reconocido como el grupo pionero del Black Metal y a su vez, una influencia determinante en el desarrollo de otros dos subgéneros del Thrash Metal y Death Metal.

Tras una serie de cambios de formación, la banda actual está formada por Cronos (bajo y voz), Rage (guitarra) y Danté (batería).
En el Leyendas del Rock 2013, Venom actuará por primera vez en España.

EL DISCO

El último disco hasta la fecha de Venom, Fallen Angles (2011), nos muestra un grupo que ha evolucionado con el paso de los años, sin dejarse atrapar por el sonido que les hizo triunfar en sus primeros discos. Venom se desmarca de otros grupos coetáneos que siguen grabando discos, elaborando sus melodías, tratando que la conjunción de la voz de Cronos sea un elemento sonoro más, que se funde con los instrumentos. Y eso lo consiguen, el grupo convertido en trío en la última etapa, muestra una contundencia en la interpretación propia de un grupo de más miembros.

LA ENTREVISTA  THE INTERVIEW

Venom es el creador del Metal Negro. Su música suena como una extraña mezcla entre Hard Rock y Heavy Metal con más una buena dosis de oscuridad y una gran pasión por la música. Así que, ¿cuáles son tus influencias musicales reales para construir esta música?

Saludos Josechu. Sí tienes razón, quería crear un nuevo tipo de Metal que tuviera más poder y agresividad que otras bandas estándar de Rock o Punk de la época, así que mezclé todos los elementos extremoss de todas las grandes bandas que me gustaban, e inventé un nuevo estilo más oscuro, más rápido y emocionante estilo de música.

Venom are the creator of the Black Metal. Your music sounds like a bizarre mix

between Hard Rock with Heavy Metal plus a large dose of darkness and a great

passion for music. So, what are your real musical influences to build this music?

Greetings Josechu. Yes you are correct, I wanted to create a new breed of Metal that had more power and aggression than the standard Rock or Punk bands of the time, so I mixed all of the extreme elements of all the great bands I liked to invent a new darker, faster and exciting style of music.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la música de Venom en la actualidad y su música hace treinta años?

Bueno, hay muchas diferencias, en primer lugar creo que el Black, el Death, el Power, el Speed ​​y el Thrash Metal son ahora aceptamos mucho más mayoritariamente por mucha más gente, como yo creo que mucha gente pensaba que era una fase que se pasaría, pero de hecho, la escena se ha ido desarrollado a lo largo de los años con más fuerza y más alcance.

En cuanto a las canciones, he experimentado con diferentes ideas a través de los años, como hacen muchos artistas con sus creaciones, aunque la estructura original y el concepto es el mismo que sigue siendo Dark Metal. Yo diría que el mejor ejemplo de esto está en los conciertos, como por ejemplo que no haya ningún problema cuando interpretamos canciones de Venom y sus grandes éxitos con más de 30 años, como 'Welcome To Hell, y que tienen cabida al lado de las canciones de ‘Fallen Angels'. Mezclamos canciones [nuevas y viejas] en una especie de popurrí, algunos a veces con dos canciones, y otras con cinco o seis canciones, y suenan increíbles y encajan a la perfección. En mi opinión esto demuestra que Venom escribe buenas canciones,  y que estas aún hoy en día son tan fuertes como lo fueron cuando yo empecé a escribir música hace más de treinta años.

What is the difference between the music of Venom today and your music thirty

years ago?

Well there are many differences, I guess firstly that Black, Death, Power, Speed and Thrash Metal are now much more widely accepted by many more people, as I think a lot of people thought it was a phase that would go away, but in fact the scene has developed over the years becoming stronger and more widespread.

With regards to the songs, I’ve experimented with different ideas over the years as many artistes do with their creations, although the original structure and concept is the same in that it is still Black Metal. I would say the best example of this is in the live shows, as we play songs from Venom’s thirty plus years and its great how songs from ‘Welcome To Hell’ can fit next to songs from ‘Fallen Angels’ no problem. We mixed

various songs [new and old] into sort of medleys, some with maybe two songs and other with five or six songs, and they sound amazing and fit together perfectly, which in my opinion this shows that Venom is about good song writing, and the songs today’s are as strong as they were when I started writing music over thirty years ago.

¿Por qué has titulado Fallen angels a vuestro  último álbum? ¿Qué vamos a encontrar diferente en él de otros álbumes anteriores de Venom?

Me gustaría asegurarme de que lo que hacemos es original, y quiero hacer una progresión de un álbum a otro, lo que no sólo pone a prueba nuestro ingenio, sino que también hace que la escritura de cada canción sea más desafiante y emocionante. He escrito muchas canciones sobre la brujería, el Infierno y Satanás, etc. y para este disco quería centrarme más en Dios y en los "males" realizadas en su nombre. Yo estaba fascinado con la historia de Lucifer, de cómo él fue el primer ángel y el más amado por Dios, pero cuando lo desafió, fue echado al infierno por toda la eternidad, junto con todos los otros ángeles que le prometieron lealtad. Creo que hoy en día Dios sería visto como un padre bastante malo, Ja.

Why do you have titled Fallen angels, your last album? What's we will be finding different in this CD from other previous albums from Venom?

I like to make sure that what we do is original, and I want to make a progression from album to album; this not only tests our inventiveness, but also makes the song writing more challenging and exciting. I’ve wrote many songs about Witchcraft, Hell and Satan etc, and for this album I wanted to focus more on God and the ‘evils’ performed in his name. I was fascinated with the story of Lucifer, how he was the first Angel and loved by God the most, but when he defied him he was cast into Hell for eternity, along with all the other Angels who pledged their allegiance to him. I think nowadays God would be seen as quite a bad parent, Ha.

Esta es la primera vez que actuáis en concierto en España. ¿Qué vais a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público español en vuestros conciertos?

Tenemos la intención de hacer un infierno de un espectáculo para nuestros legiones españolas, será emocionante para los fans de la banda y tocar por fin en directo en España, de hecho me parece tan mal que Venom nunca haya actuado en España hasta ahora, pero estoy contento de que un promotor finalmente haya cumplido las condiciones adecuadas para que hagamos un concierto.

Sabemos que tenemos un muchísimos viejos y nuevos fans en España, por lo que estaban planeando un setlist mixto en vivo de canciones con el que podamos satisfacer a todos, esperamos poder tocar las canciones correctas que nuestros fans quieren oír. Tal vez alguien debería crear un enlace al sitio web para los aficionados a votar sobre qué canciones les gustaría escuchar, entonces tocaremos las que tengan mayor cantidad de votos.

This is your first time in concert around Spain. What are you going to offer in your live concerts and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows this time?

We plan to make one hell of a show for our Spanish Legions, it will be exciting for both band and fans to finally play live in Spain, in fact it seems so wrong that Venom have never played in Spain until now, but I’m just glad a promoter has finally made the right conditions for us to make a concert.

We know we have quite a lot of old and new fans in Spain, so were planning a mixed live setlist of songs to hopefully satisfy everyone, we hope to play the right songs that our fans wish to hear. Maybe someone should set up a website link for the fans to vote on which songs they would like to hear, then we will play the ones with the most votes.

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2013?, ¿algo que podáis anticiparnos? ¿Cuándo un nuevo disco?

Venom ya ha comenzado a escribir nuevas canciones para el próximo álbum tan pronto como se terminó el último disco, por lo que estaban trabajando con la discográfica para fijar una fecha de lanzamiento y se anunciará en breve. Tenemos planes para otro lanzamiento que las Legiones han estado exigiendo desde hace bastante tiempo, y que es un álbum de los 'medleys' en directo, por lo que vamos a trabajar en este álbum recopilatorio de clásicos pronto.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2013? Can you anticipate anything to us? When a new disc?

Venom started writing new songs for the next album as soon as we completed the last album, so were working with the label to set a release date which should be announced soon. We have plans for another release which the Legions have been demanding for quite some time, and that is an album of the live ‘medleys’, so we will be working on

this album compilation of classics soon.

¿Piensas que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál es el futuro del músico?

Hmm esto es difícil, espero que sea una cosa muy buena, creo que la música debe ser para todos, así que espero que le llegue a la gente en países lejanos que no pueden acceder a música, la capacidad de tener acceso a la música a través de internet.

Debemos aprovechar las nuevas tecnologías, ya que es la única manera de avanzar, y que sea beneficioso para todos en el futuro, los problemas que escuchamos acerca de la descarga ilegal, etc. pronto será una cosa del pasado, estoy seguro de los sistemas de eventualmente funcionará correctamente para todos.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

Hmm that’s difficult, I hope it is a good thing really, I believe music should be for everyone, so hopefully it will give people in far off countries who cannot access music, the ability to gain access to music through the internet.

We should embrace the new technologies as it is the only way forward, and it will be of benefit to everyone in the future, the problems we hear about the illegal downloading etc will soon be a thing of the past, I’m confident the systems will eventually work correctly for everyone. 

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Todo esto, esta es mi vida, sé que cuando la gente me pregunta sobre el éxito y ellos imagina que es por el dinero y el éxito, pero para mí y para otros como yo, es más sobre la posibilidad de hacer mi música cuando y donde yo quiera, tocar en directo y grabar tanto con quien quiera, como cuando quiera, esto para mí es el mejor recuerdo de mi música. Hablé con Dave Grohl de los Foo Fighters / Nirvana sobre esto, y él está de acuerdo, sabes que tienes éxito cuando puedes controlar tu música, como sólo tu sabes lo que es mejor de lo que haces, y la libertad te hace más creativo.

What is your best memory about music?

All of it, this is my life, I know when people ask me about success and they sometimes guess this is about the money you make when successful, but for me and others like me, it’s more about the ability to make my music when and where I want, to play live and record both with who I want and when, this to me is the best memory of my music. I spoke to Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters / Nirvana about this

also, and he agrees, you know you have success when you can control your music, as only you know what is best for what you do, and the freedom makes you more creative.

  

¿Qué piensas de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo en general?

Siempre he dicho que la música es una gran liberación, una de esas cosas que pueden ayudar a la gente a olvidar sus problemas, al menos por un tiempo, como cuando se escucha un disco o vas a un espectáculo, pero tenemos que aprender como pasar a través y hacer frente a los desafíos, tanto si sus problemas son económicos comos si son otros conflictos, incluso guerras. Creo que tenemos que trabajar todos para encontrar soluciones a nuestra situación económica, y confíar en que los políticos pueden hacer las cosas bien.

What do you think of the current economic situation in Europe, and in the world in general?

I’ve always said that music is a great release, one of those things that can help people forget about their troubles, at least for a time like when you listen an album or go to a show, but we have to learn how to get through and deal with our challenges, whether its economic challenges or other disputes, even wars. I guess we have to all work toward finding solutions to our economic climate, and trust the politicians can get it right.

... Un libro / A book?:

No leo libros de ficción, no tengo tiempo, pero leo libros sobre hechos similares, el Universo, la Naturaleza o Filosofía, incluyendo el Ocultismo, la Brujería y otras religiones.

I don’t read fiction books, I don’t have time, but I do read books on facts like the Universe, Nature or Philosophy including the Occult, Witchcraft and other religions.

La última película que vi fue la nueva de de 007 Bond, Skyfall es impresionante. Sé que Bond es el personaje de espionaje inglés por excelencia, pero es divertido y creo que la mayoría de la gente en Inglaterra ve a Bond como ficción divertida, que viene a salvar al mundo, otra vez.

The last movie I saw was the new 007 Bond Skyfall awesome. I know Bond is a quintessentially English espionage character, but its fun and I think most people in England see Bond as fun fiction, who comes to save the world, again.

Me gusta el nuevo single de The Rolling Stones, Doom & Gloom; espero con interés escuchar su nuevo álbum.

Encontré una copia del álbum de Nina Hagen llamado Unbehagen en Internet la semana pasada, así que he estado poniendo este fantástico álbum. Originalmente tenía una copia en vinilo a principios de los años 1980.
