Cheap Time es un banda de Rock-Garage de Nashville, Tennessee liderada por Jeffrey Novak. La banda, que se formó en 2006, ha girado con Jay Reatard, Yo La Tengo, y Guitar Wolf. Han lanzado cinco singles, y cuatro álbumes de estudio con In The Red Records: Cheap Time (2008), Fantastic Explanations (2010), Wallpaper Music (2012) y Exit Smiles (2013).

Cheap Time is a Nashville, Tennessee based garage-rock band fronted by Jeffrey Novak. The band, which formed in 2006, has toured with Jay Reatard, Yo La Tengo, and Guitar Wolf. They have released five 7" singles, and four studio albums on In The Red Records. Cheap Time (2008), Fantastic Explanations (2010), Wallpaper Music (2012) and Exit Smiles (2013).

Cheap Time mezcla riffs de estilo Glam Rock, melodías Powerpop con elementos de Punk Rock. En los orígenes de la banda, su sonido fue comparado Redd Kross y The Quick. Su segundo álbum fue comparado con The Kinks y Alex Chilton, mientras que su tercer álbum ha sido comparado con bandas de Punk clásico como The Saints y Magazine. Novak ha declarado que sus artistas favoritos son John Cale, Kevin Ayers, y Peter Hammill.

Cheap Time mixes glamrock riffs, powerpop melodies with elements of punk rock. The band's earlier sound was compared to early Redd Kross, and The Quick. Their 2nd album was compared to The Kinks and Alex Chilton, while their 3rd album has been compared to classic punk bands the The Saints and Magazine. ¿Por qué el nombre de Cheap Time?

Nuestro bajista original, Jemina, fue quien sugirió el nombre de la banda. Se trata de la película “Blood In Blood Out”, que fue escrito por Floyd Mutrux, quien también escribió la película The Hollywood Knights, a la que la banda New Bomb Turks debe su nombre. Soy un gran fan de sus primeras películas de los años 70 como Dusty and Sweets McGee y American Hot Wax.

Why the name Cheap Time?

Our original bassist, Jemina, was the one who suggested the band name. It comes from the film Blood In Blood Out, which was written by Floyd Mutrux, who also wrote the film The Hollywood Knights, which the band New Bomb Turks got their name from. I'm a big fan of his earlier 70's films like Dusty And Sweets McGee and American Hot Wax.  

La música de Cheap Time me recuerda al Punk & Rock los 70 y primeros 80, pero con la fuerza del Punk del siglo XXI ¿cuáles son realmente vuestras influencias musicales?

Todos somos grandes fans de muchas bandas del punk original de los 70. Para nuestro baterista, Ryan, su banda favorita de todos los tiempos es de sobra los Ramones. Yo me enecuento a mi mismo más dentro cosas como el proto-punk más singular y el rock progresivo, como Sparks y Van Der Graaf Generator, pero sobre todo me encantan los discos de John Cale, especialmente su trilogía de discos de LPs de Island de mediados de los 70. Su álbum, ‘FEAR’, es lo mejor que he tenido para mí.

The Music of Cheap Time reminds me to the Punk &  Rock of the seventies years  and early eighties but with the force of the Rock of the XXI century, what are your really musical influences?

We're all really big fans of a lot of original 70's punk bands. Our drummer, Ryan, his favorite band of all time is easily the Ramones. I'm more into odd proto-punk and progressive rock stuff myself, like Sparks and Van Der Graaf Generator, but most of all I really love John Cale records, especially his trilogy of LP's of Island from the mid-70's. His album, FEAR, is about as good as it gets for me.

¿Por qué tituláis “Exit Smiles” a vuestro próximo disco?

El título, ‘Exits Smiles’, se puede interpretar de varias formas diferentes. Eso es lo que nos atrajo a ponerlo. Pensé en ese título hace un par de años. Siempre volvía a mi y con más sentido por más razones. Al principio pensé en ello con la sensación del listillo, donde se está haciendo una salida de una fiesta o algo así, y que no se molestan en decir adiós a nadie. Sólo sonreír e irse.

Why you titled "Exit Smiles" to your newest disc?

The title, Exit Smiles, can be taken several different ways. That's why I was so drawn to use it. I thought about that title for a couple years. It just kept coming back to me and making more sense for different reasons. I originally thought of it in the smart ass sense, where you're making an exit from a party or something, and you don't bother to tell anyone goodbye. You just smile and leave.

¿Qué vamos a encontrar en vuestro nuevo álbum "Exit Smiles"?

Realmente estaba tratando de escribir un álbum que sonara más progresista que nuestro trabajo anterior. Sabía que las canciones tenían que ser más largas, porque tenía la intención de que el disco tuviera únicamente 8 canciones. Cada uno de nuestros discos anteriores, tiene 2 canciones menos que la anterior, así que quería mantenerlo y vi como un buen desafío escribir canciones más largas y complejas que no fueran aburridas y  que no estén se parezcan al krautrock (corriente musical de rock experimental surgida en Alemania Occidental). Ya habíamos hecho nuestra anterior LP, “Wallpaper Music”, con canciones como "Underneath The Fruitflies" y no tenía la intención de repetirnos a   nosotros mismos.

What's we will  found in your last album, “Exit Smiles”?

I was definitely trying to write a more progressive sounding album than our previous work. I knew the songs had to be longer, because I was intent with only having 8 songs on the record. Each of our previous records has 2 songs less than the previous one, so I wanted to keep that up and saw it as a cool challenge to write more complex/longer songs that didn't get boring and didn't rely on jamming in the krautrock sense. We had already done that our previous LP, Wallpaper Music, with songs like "Underneath The Fruitflies," and I had no intent on repeating ourselves. 

Creo que esta es la primera vez que actuáis en concierto en España, ¿qué vais a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público español en sus espectáculos?

En realidad, ya es la tercera vez que hemos venimos. Esta es nuestra cuarta gira por Europa. Por desgracia,  no visitamos España en nuestra primera gira por Europa en 2008. España tiene una reputación increíble de amar el rock'n'roll! Tiene sentido que muchas bandas estadounidenses vayan a girar por España. Es de los mejor. Desde nuestra experiencia, los españoles son contundentemente agradables! La comida siempre es fantástica, y es todo lo que ves es muy bonitos. No puedo pensar en una sola cosa negativa que decir al respecto.

I think this is your first time in concert around Spain, what are you going to offer in your live concert, and what do you hope from the Spanish public in your shows?

This is actually our 3rd time to come to Spain. This is our 4th time to tour Europe. Unfortunately we didn't tour Spain on our first tour of Europe back in 2008. Spain has an amazing reputation for loving rock'n'roll! It makes sense that a lot of American bands just come over to tour Spain. It's kind of the best. From our experiences, Spanish people are overwhelming nice! The food is always fantastic, and it's pretty beautiful everywhere you look. I can't think of a single negative thing to say about it.

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2013?, ¿y para 2014? ¿Algo que podáis anticiparnos? ¿Cuándo un nuevo disco?

Después de esta gira europea vamos a parar el resto del año. Recorremos todos los estados en enero y febrero del próximo año en una gira completa por EE.UU.. A principios de este año, telonearemos en las giras con Social Distortion y Mudhoney. Muhoney es mi banda favorita con la que jamás hemos girado. Son una de las mejores bandas en directo que he visto nunca. Su baterista Dan Peters, es probablemente el mejor baterista que he visto tocar en persona, y son algunas de las personas más guays y molonas que jamás he conocido.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2013? And for 2014? Can you anticipate anything to us? When a new album?

After this European tour we're off for the rest of the year. We're touring the states in January and February of next year with a full US tour. Earlier this year we opening slots on tours with Social Distortion and Mudhoney. Muhoney easily my favorite band we've ever toured with. They're one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Their drummer, Dan Peters, is probably the best drummer I've ever seen play in person, and they're some of the nicest/coolest people we've ever met.

¿Pensáis que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?

No, porque la gente todavía quiere ver a los grupos tocar en directo. Así como el pan es para la mantequilla, es para las bandas estar activamente de gira. Eso es lo más binito de todo lo que personalmente vivo por ahí. No vendemos muchos discos, en realidad ya nadie lo hace, pero si te entregas en directo y giras lo suficiente, puedes ser capaz de sobrevivir.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

Jeffrey: No, because people still want to see live bands play. That's where the bread and butter is for active touring bands. That's pretty much all I personally live off of. We don't sell that many records, no one really does anymore, but if you deliver live and tour enough, you might be able to survive.

¿Cuál es vuestro mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Para mí, personalmente, fue sobre todo en mi adolescencia y descubrir todo por primera vez y todo el proceso de averiguarlo por ti mismo. Para mí, que pasaba la mayor parte de mi tiempo a solas en mi habitación escuchando música o escribiendo canciones y haciendo grabaciones de cassetees de 4 pistas. Ahora tengo 28 años, y no he cambiado mucho. En cuanto a los shows en directos, vi la actuación  de Sonic Youth en Memphis en mayo, cuando tenía 15 años, y vi a Cheater Slicks telonera a The Oblivians en el Hi-Tone cuando tenía 18 años. Yo por lo general pienso que los espectáculos de Cheater Slicks  fueron la epifanía musical de mi vida. Eso cambió todo para mí. Se me puso en el camino donde estoy ahora.

What is your best memory about music?

For me personally, it's all about being a teenager and discovering everything for the first time and the whole process of figuring everything out for yourself. For me, that involved spending most of my time alone in my room either listening to music or writing songs and doing 4-track cassette recordings. I'm 28 now, and not that much has changed. As for live shows, I saw Sonic Youth play at Memphis In May when I was 15, and I saw the Cheater Slicks open for the Oblivians at the Hi-Tone when I was 18. I generally think of that Cheater Slicks show as the epiphany musical moment of my life. It changed everything for me. It set me on the track for where I'm at now.

¿Qué piensas de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo en general?

No puedo opinar sobre eso. Estoy muy fuera de onda de los acontecimientos actuales. No somos una banda muy política, en el sentido de que no nos veo siempre escribiendo material muy politizado. Desconecto cuando las bandas hacen eso. Es por eso que yo siempre he odiado a The Clash y U2.

What do you think of the current economic situation in Europe, and in the world in general?

I can't really comment on that. I'm so out of the loop with current events. We're not a very political band, in the sense that I don't see us ever writing very politically charged material. I'm pretty turned off when bands do that. That's why I've always hated The Clash and U2.

… Un libro?:

El último libro que leí la semana pasada fue "Second Variety" de Philip K. Dick, que es sólo un cuento que terminó siendo convertido película en 1995, Screamers, pero también fue la mayor inspiración en las películas de Terminator de James Cameron . Me encantan los cuentos de PKD y sus novelas. Leí su libro “We Can Build You” el invierno pasado mientras estábamos de gira por Europa.

... A book?:

The most recent book I read last week was "Second Variety" by Philip K. Dick, which is just a short story that ended up being turned into the 1995 film Screamers, but it was also a major inspiration on James Cameron's Terminator films. I really love PKD's short stories and his novels. I read his book We Can Build You last winter while we were touring Europe.

Es Halloween aquí en Estados Unidos en estos momentos, por lo que he estado tratando de ver nada más que películas de terror todo el mes. La mejor que he visto recientemente es “Tourist Trap” de 1979. Es algo así como “La matanza de Texas” con maniquíes y máscaras aún más espeluznantes. Es de alguna manera PG sólo nominal, ya que en realidad no es sangrienta. Me gusta especialmente, por que el asesino se parece a nuestro viejo bajista, Stephen Braren.

... A movie?:

It's Halloween here in the states right now, so I've been trying to watch nothing but horror films all month. The best one I've seen recently is Tourist Trap from 1979. It's kind of like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with mannequins and even creepier masks. It's somehow only rated PG, because it's not really gory. I especially like that the killer looks like our old bassist, Stephen Braren.

…Una canción?

Mi canción favorita últimamente ha sido "Rongwrong" de Quiet Sun, de su único LP, Mainstream de 1975. Es la única canción con coros en el álbum, y que está escrita y cantada por el baterista, Charles Hayward. Fue versionada por Brian Eno en el LP 801 Live pero sólo versiona la primera mitad de la canción. Me gustaría versionar la segunda mitad de la canción con Cheap Time algún día.

... A song?:

My favorite song lately has been "Rongwrong" by Quiet Sun, off their only LP, 1975's Mainstream. It's the only song with vocals on the album, and it's written and sung by their drummer, Charles Hayward. It was covered by Brian Eno on the 801 LIVE LP, but he only covers the first half of the song. I'd really like to cover the 2nd half of the song with Cheap Time someday.

…Un album?

El disco que he estado escuchando más últimamente es “Introducing Sparks” de 1977. Acabo de ver Sparks tocar por primera vez la semana pasada en Atlanta en su gira “Two Hands One Mouth”, con sólo los The Mael Brothers en el escenario sin una banda de acompañamiento. El espectáculo no estuvo exento de magia, pero la canción que más me sorprendió fue "Those Mysteries", la última canción de “Introducing Sparks”. Había olvidado qué gran disco es “Introducing Sparks”.  Es fácil perderse entre “Big Beat” y  “No.1 In Heaven”.

En cuanto a disco nuevos de este año, será muy difícil encontrar nada al nivel del nuevo LP de Mudhoney, “Vanishing Point”.

... An album?:

The album I've been listening to the most at the moment is Introducing Sparks from 1977. I just saw Sparks play for the first time last week in Atlanta on their Two Hands One Mouth tour, with just the Mael brothers on stage without a backing band. The show was nothing short of magical, but the song that surprised me the most was "Those Mysteries" the last song off Introducing Sparks. I had forgotten what a great album over all Introducing Sparks is. It's easy to get lost in-between Big Beat and No.1 In Heaven.

As for a new album from this year, you're hard pressed to find anything else on the level of Mudhoney's new LP, Vanishing Point.

….Un grupo o solista?:

Mi novia me ha conseguido una grandísima parte del catálogo clásico de Parliament/Funkadelic en el año pasado, que empecé rápidamente a escuchar de su copia de la colección perfecta del  material de Westbounds, “Funkadelic's Greatest Hits”. No hay banda más grande o más misteriosa que el grupo de de los años 70, P-funk. Es muy difícil encontrarles tocando y cantando en algunos discos. Me hubiera gustado que existiera un libro que me informara bien de ellos para ayudarme a completar los huecos.

En cuanto a algo más actual, se trata de Mark E. Smith And The Fall. El nuevo álbum Re-Mit es genial! Estuvimos tocando en La Guess Who Festival con ellos en Holanda a finales de noviembre. No hay banda que más me guste ver que a The Fall.

... A group or soloist?:

My girlfriend has gotten me heavily into the classic Parliament/Funkadelic catalog in the past year, that was kick started from listening to her copy of the perfect collection of Westbound material, Funkadelic's Greatest Hits. There's is no band larger or more mysterious to than the 70's P-funk group. It's so hard to figure who's actually playing and singing on certain albums. I really wish a very informative book existed on them to help me fill in the gaps.

As for something more current, it's all about Mark E. Smith and the Fall. The new album Re-Mit is great! We're playing La Guess Who Festival with them in Holland at the end of November. There's no band I'm more excited to see than The Fall.
