The Crunch - Brand new brand (2015). Entrevista a Sulo Karlsson

EL GRUPO

The Crunch es un grupo sueco/inglés de power pop con influencias rock y punk, que iniciaron su andadura en Enero de 2013 cuando su cantante  estaba escribiendo el libro Keep Yourself Alive, y se puso en contacto para consultar diferentes pasajes del mismo con el resto de la formación.

El primer single es del 3 de Junio de 2013, con el título “Down By The Border” y grabado en los estudios Berry Street Studio. Viendo la luz su primer álbum “Bussy Making Noise” el 28 de octubre bajo el sello Legal Records.

Hay que esperar hasta el 5 de Junio de 2013 para poder acudir a su primer concierto, en la sala The Garaje en Londres. A ello, le sigue una gira por Irlanda y un par de tours por Suecia. En noviembre de 2014 graban su segundo disco, “Brand new brand”, que verá la luz en primavera de  2015.

Sulo Karlsson es conocido por ser el cantante de la mítica banda The Diamond Dogs. Ha trabajado con artistas como Ian Hunter, The Damned, The Cult y también ha escrito canciones para gente como Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy)

Terry Chimes es el batería original de The Clash, formando parte de su primer single “White Riot”. Al dejar The Clash sustituye a Jerry Nolan en Jonhny Thunders and the Heartbreaders. En el año 82 regresa a la banda liderada por Joe Strumer para hacer con ellos y The Who la gira americana en dicho año. Posteriormente se  une a bandas como Hanoi Rocks, Black Sabbath en su gira del año 1987 y en el año 2003 su reconocimiento llega formando del salón de la fama del Rock and Roll por su contribución a la música.

Dave Treguna es el bajista original del grupo  Sham 69. Tocando posteriormente en otras bandas como Lords Of The New Church.

Mick Geggus es el guitarrista original de la mítica banda oi! Cockney Rejects. Es junto con su hermano el creador de míticos himnos punks como “Oi, Oi, Oi”

Debido a la enorme demanda de conciertos en Europa, en Diciembre de 2014 firman con SkullsW.A.R. como booking agency para poder extender su música por todo el continente.
En la gira por España, The Crunch ofrecerá en Abril los siguientes conciertos:

¿Por qué el nombre de The Crunch?

Bueno, eso de los nombres es un tema difícil y al final realmente no es algo importante, porque  te acostumbras a ello. Terry trajo el nombre Crunch y creo que describe muy bien el sonido que hacemos.

Why the name The Crunch?

Well it's a tricky thing with names and in the the end it doesn't really matter cause you'll get used to it. Terry came up with the name Crunch and I think it describes the way we sound very good

Las canciones de The Crunch suenan a Rock, a Punk, a Noise y a Power Pop (y pequeños guiños a otros estilos como el Reggae, el Country Rock, el Rock & Roll). Una curiosa mezcla de estilos que da como resultado el exclusivo sonido de vuestra música, pero ¿cuáles son realmente vuestras  influencias musicales?

Somos todos niños de la música de los 60 y los 70, por lo que estuvimos junto al Punk, el Glam, el PowerPop, el Northern Soul, etc. Y cuando escribo las canciones, esa es mi biblioteca de influencias.

The songs of The Crunch sounds to Rock, to Punk, to Noise and Power Pop (and nods to other styles like Reggae, Country Rock, Rock & Roll). A curious mix of styles that results in the exclusive sound of your music, what really are your musical influences?

We all children of the 60's and 70's music, so beside the Punk it's glam, powerpop, Northern Soul etc. And when I write the songs that's my library of influences.

Sulo Karlsson, Terry Chimes, Dave Treguna, Mick Geggus y Idde Schultz .. ¡Uf ..! Todos vosotros sois iconos de la música con grandes carreras, y ahora, todos juntos, formáis una nueva banda banda de Rock. ¿Cómo se controla el ego de cinco superestrellas como vosotros que todo suene tan bien?

Es muy fácil, no hay egos en esta banda. Somos una pandilla, una banda que nos llevamos muy bien entre todos y tenemos el mismo fin. Pero como banda, ¡somos la única banda que importa!

Sulo Karlsson, Terry Chimes, Dave Treguna, Mick Geggus and Idde Schultz .. ¡Uf..! All of you are music icons with great careers, and you all together form a new Rock band. How do you manage the ego of five superstars as you, and get it sound so much good?

It's very easy, there's no egos in this band. We're a gang, a band that get along very well together  and are determined to go to the same destination. But as a band, we're the only band that matters!

Vuestro último trabajo hasta la fecha es el LP "Busy Making Noise", grabado en 2013. En la primavera de 2015 está previsto que se lance el segundo álbum de la banda. ¿Qué vamos a escuchar este álbum diferente del anterior álbum? ¿Podría decirnos el título del álbum?

La mayor diferencia es que Idde Schultz es ahora miembro de pleno derecho, incluso ella es la voz principal en uno de los cortes. Otra cosa es que ahora somos más que una unidad, hemos tocado conciertos y sabemos cómo queremos sonar.

¡Qué puedo decir...!, que es un jodido gran disco y ¡os va a encantar!

Your last work to date is the LP "Busy Making Noise" recorded in 2013. In the spring of 2015 is scheduled to release the second album of the band. What are we going to listen to this album different from the previous album? Could you tell us the title of album?

The biggest difference is that Idde Schultz now is a full member, she even sings lead on one of the tracks. One other thing is that we're now are more of a unit, we've played gigs and we know how we want to sound.

What can I say, it's a fucking great album and you'll all love it!

¿Es esta vuestra primera gira por España? ¿Qué vais a ofrecer en vuestros conciertos y qué esperáis del público español?

La primera vez que giramos con The Crunch, estuvimos en un festival el año pasado, pero no fue una gira apropiada. Para mí, como Diamond Dog, ¡España es mi segunda patria! He tocado tantos conciertos por todo el país, que ¡siento que vuelvo a casa! Y vosotros tenéis el mejor público de Europa.

Is this your first time touring around Spain? What are you going to offer in your live concert, and what do you hope from the Spanish public in your shows?

First time touring with The Crunch, we did one festival last year but not a proper tour. For me being a Diamond Dog, Spain is my second homeland! I played so many gigs all around the country so it feels like coming home! And you've got the best crowd in Europe.

¿Tenéis alguna sorpresa o algún plan alternativa para esta gira 2015? ¿Puedes anticipar no algo? ¿Cuándo estará a la venta el nuevo álbum?

El álbum "Brand new brand" se dará a conocer el 30 de April. El 23 de Marzo vamos a lanzar el vídeo del primer single en YouTube solo "Neon Madonna". El 25 de marzo vamos a tocar un concierto exclusivo en el Koko en Camden Londres en la presentación de la nueva película de Joe Strummer "I need a dodge" sobre el exilio de Strummer en España en 1985. The Crunch tocará un setlist especial de canciones de The Crunch y The Clash esa noche. El 29 de Mazro habrá un concierto de lanzamiento para el álbum en Londres.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2015? Can you anticipate anything to us? When on sale the new album?

The album "Brand new brand" will be released 30 april. 23 march we will release the first single/YouTube video "Neon Madonna". 25 march we'll play an exclusive gig at the Koko in Camden London lounging the new Joe Strummer movie "I need a dodge" about Strummers exile in Spain 1985. The Crunch will play a special set of Crunch and Clash songs that evening. 29 march there will be a release gig for the album in London.

¿Crees que el mundo digital va a terminar con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Qué crees que es el futuro de la música?

Espero que los niños pronto entiendan que la música no puede ser gratis, alguien tiene que pagar para hacerla y la calidad del sonido bajará con cada escucha que hagan en sus teléfonos móviles de mierda. También es deprimente ver lo poco que los niños han aprendido sobre la historia del rock.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I hope that the kids soon understand that music can't be free, someone needs to pay to make it and the sound quality will go down with everyone listening in their crap mobile phones. It's also depressing to see how little the kids learned about rock history.

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo de la música?

Son tantos recuerdos compañero... Es mi vida, pero por elegir uno, probablemente es cuando ¡compré mi primer disco! ¡El single “My boy” en vinilo de Elvis Presley! ¡Ahí empezó todo!”

What is your best memory about music?

It's so many memories mate... It's my life but to pick one it's probably when I bought my first record! A vinyl single with Elvis Presley "My boy"! That started it all!

¿Qué opinas acerca de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo en general?

Creo que estamos viviendo en tiempos deprimentes y peligrosos. El desempleo, los terroristas, un viento fascista  que sopla a lo largo de Europa, ¡al igual que lo hizo en 1939! Tenemos que ser más abiertos de mente y darnos cuenta de que todos compartimos juntos este planeta, así que vamos hacerlo mejor y ayudarnos mutuamente.

What do you think about the current economic situation in Europe and in the world in general?

I think we're living in depressing and dangerous times. Unemployment, terrorists, a fascist wind blowing through Europe, just like it did back in 1939! We need to be more open minded and realize that we all sharing this planet together so let's make the best of it and help each other.
