La ambición del de Nueva York es insaciable. Jesse Malin, el que años atrás fuera el cantante de la banda Heart Attack o la banda punk glam D Generation, regresa con su nuevo trabajo en solitario "Outsiders" (One Little Indian / Velvet Elk Records, Octubre 2015). Un álbum espontáneo, reflexivo e incluso poético, es el octavo álbum de estudio.

Producido por Don DiLego, nos muestra su lado rock más clásico, con cierta vocación pop y mucho country rock.

“Outsiders” se plantea como una obra vital en su carrera y llega a tan solo seis meses de distancia del anterior ‘New York before the war’ después de casi cinco años de pausa. El músico neoyorquino necesitaba seguir creando a pesar de haber estrenado en el mismo año dos discos,  porque a estas alturas todavía le queda ambición para ponerse a prueba.

THE INTERVIEW

“Outsiders”’ songs sound like intesive and elegant Folk Rock from the 70s, maybe a bit Psicodelia from the 60s and now more Country Music, Jazz, Blues and Soul. A great mix of styles that results on the fantastic sound of your music now. But, what really are your musical influences?

My influences are many. Everything from Elton John to the Bad Brains, Paul Simon to the Ramones. The Clash to the Replacements. Sam Cooke and Jim Croce. And many more.

Last year marks 35 years since Jesse Malin began as a musician with Heart Attack. Much has changed your musical style, really? What is the difference between the music of Jesse Malin today and your music 35 years ago?

I’m a little less angry, but still have a lot of fire and hunger to do what I want to do.

 You edited your last LP titled "Outsiders" in 2015, and a new re-issue from “The Fine Art of Self Destruction” in 2016. Were your expectations completed with these albums?

To reach as many people as possible. Hopefully make a difference somewhere, somehow, with someone.

What do we will see and enjoy in your live concerts for next tour around Spain?

I’ll be playing stuff from all my records. Full band, full tilt. Horns, bits, and many surprises.

What are your plans for this new year 2016? We assume that you will touring around clubs and festivals. Can you advance anything to us? Any important event?

A new D Generation record, the first one since 1999. A lot of writing and recording. A new Jesse Malin record, in time. And more shows.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

There will always be people banging on things. It goes back to the cavemen. There will always be music and the business will follow. Rules are meant to be broken, authority to be questioned. And there will always be music outside the business.

What is your best memory about music?

Hearing the radio as a kid: Elton John, “Daniel.” Taking that trip to Spain.

How is a normal day in the life ofa member of Jesse Malin?

I get up, I work out, I like to go for a run. Lively up yourself, as Bob Marley said. Play some music, go to rehearsal. Check out a show. Eat some vegetarian food. Maybe a couple of drinks, play some records, crash out.

What do you think about the current economic and social situation in Spain, Europe and in the World in general?

I think the world is in a very tough place as we rape its resources. There’s way too much corporate greed, chain stores, digital mindlessness, and surveillance. But what else is new? Don’t let it ruin your day.

Sonic Reducer, ain’t no loser. Have guitar will travel.

London Calling, The Clash. Two full discs that have it all. Reggae, soul and punk, brother.

Cheap Trick. Super power pop. Midwestern America. Sweet and raw.

Bowling. With skinheads, of course.
